In case there were any doubts about the NRA’s noble political arguments for expansive gun rights, the gun lobby’s embrace of Donald Trump should sweep them away. The NRA always reminds us that it puts ‘freedom first,’ but in truth, it cares not a whit about our democracy and basic rights; its only concern is to expand the gun market, at any cost. What’s more, in sticking by the disastrous and openly racist Trump campaign, the NRA risks alienating itself and its agenda—perhaps fatally.
It is difficult to believe as a life-long educator that the media has yet to ask any of the presidential candidates about their views on K-12 public education. It is a well known fact the public education in Connecticut and across the nation has suffered immensely as an outgrowth of the policies of the George W. Bush administration with its No Child Left Behind (NCLB) program. Likewise, public education continued its downward spiral as a result of President Barack Obama’s appointment of Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, who ushered in the disastrous Race to the Top along with the Common Core State Standards.
The good people of Connecticut are terrified that society will be overrun by the dangerous, ignorant foreigners and their strange religion. Politicians fan the flames of prejudice to increase their personal popularity with voters. Editorial cartoonists depict these immigrants as less than human, with animal-like features. Sometimes the caricatures show the foreigners with weapons, including bombs, primed for use against innocent civilians. This scenario sounds like today’s Muslim refugees from Syria, but it’s not. It was the life of the immigrant Irish of the 1850s.
